It's a dog's life in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #812 from the issue of August 1, 2022. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.

"See? With this getup, they won't even let me chase my tail."

The CartoonStock Caption Contest #129

I've been busy practicing for the CartoonStock Caption Contest #129. My three entries may be seen below. The musical drawing is by Carolita Johnson.

"Please hear out my overture."
"I'm about to sweeten the deal."
"What if I were to throw in a sparkling rendition of the Kreutzer Sonata?"

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #757

It seems the weather did not cooperate with The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #757 from the issue of May 31, 2021. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.

"I always feared the cloud could be hacked."

I'm saving this caption for a rainy day:
"At least we won't have to deal with ants."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #119

There's plenty of misdirection in the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #119. My three entries are shown below. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.

"Actually, I said you should try a little levity."
"And do you feel THIS week's session is worth $200?"
"Clowns? I thought you had a fear of magicians."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #113

It's beach season already in the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #113. My three entries are below. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.

"I'm afraid I haven't a clue."
"It's not just you. Your Mom can't solve me either."
"If you're stuck, try the sudoku on my butt."

This caption would have made a fine acrostic:

"I was watching an obnoxious Liberty Mutual ad when 5 Down 'Flightless bird' suddenly came to me."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #71

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #71 may be set in a contemporary home, but it still seems to have something of the jungle about it. My three captions are presented here, but the third is merely a rewrite of the first. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.
"He treats me like I'm Sheena."
"After all these years I never get tired of yelling, "Watch out for that tree!"
"He makes me feel like Sheena."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #64

That's one small step for my three entries in the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #64. I found this one to be quite tricky. Does this scenario suggest a national tragedy? The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.
"There's a sort of funny story about your life support."
"Not the moon. Two more guesses."
"The good news is you're very much alive. The bad news is you're way off course."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #58

In the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #58, a well-dressed woman is accosted by a "weirdo," as he's referred to in the JPEG file name. Three entries are allowed; mine are below. I found the scenario to be not very funny. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.
"I see you follow norms. I'm Norm."
"I've seen 'Joker' seventeen times."
"Want to see my stinger?"

January 22, 2020 Update:  The Winner

In his caption contest commentary, seven-time New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest winner Lawrence Wood again brought up one of my captions. I believe this is the sixth time he's done this, and two of those times mentioned two captions. Yet I've never made it to the top three...

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #688

You'd better salute my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #688 for December 2, 2019. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.
"Everyone has his price. Mine is a matter of record."

These captions weren't up to code:
"I'm in purchasing."
"Ma'am, war doesn't come cheap."
"Today's military is up front about bribes."
"They're markers for future medals."
"The Administration gave me a receipt for my ethics."

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #666

I had a full two weeks to devise my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #666 for the weeks of June 10 and 17, 2019, but I wrote it at the last minute anyway. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson. The sofa is by Studio 65.

"Everyone I know just kisses my ass."

These captions weren't garish enough:
"All day long I get nothing but lip service."
"You always seem to know what I need."
"Do you rent out your office for parties?"

June 24, 2019 Update:  The Finalists

July 1, 2019 Update:  I did not vote this week. I like all the captions, but I find the first one disarmingly original.

Note:  Two weeks ago Shark Week came a little early with a caption contest from cartoonist P. C. Vey. Swim for your life to Contest #665!

Last week I wrote a short piece about the sofa.

Furnishing The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #666

The New Yorker's issue of June 10 & 17, 2019 is a double issue; there is apparently no longer enough news to require news weeklies to go to press every single week. As an added bonus, I have an additional week to procrastinate on the writing of my caption for The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #666. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson and it pays homage to an Italian furniture classic, the 1972 'Bocca Lip' Sofa designed by Studio 65 and inspired by the lips of Marilyn Monroe.

Here's an example of the sofa from 1stdibs:
Studio 65
Marilyn Bocca Lip Sofa, 1972
Sold for $4950 on 1stdibs

Note:  1stdibs currently offers a 'Marilyn Bocca Lip' Sofa for $7,400 here. The sofa is still in production. Longtime readers may recall my 2012 post on this sofa here.

None of the information provided here is in the least helpful in writing a funny caption for the contest, but it might very well help with your home furnishing. Send me a picture when you redecorate.

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #658

I have mixed emotions about my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #658 for April 15, 2019. The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.

"This is my first mixer."

For these captions I should have read the owner's manual:
"What if I don't want us to be blended?"
"I thought we were already a good mix."
"Okay, let's shake things up."
"You'll excuse me if I don't jiggle back."

April 29, 2019 Update:  I voted with Boston.

May 6, 2019 Update:  The Winner

Note:  Last week cartoonist Jeremy Nguyen took us to work in an unusual office shared by people and dogs. My caption might have benefitted from my working overtime on it. Anyway, clock in and see Contest #657.

My Copy of Liza Donnelly's Be the Person Your Dog Thinks You Are

On Friday evening in Brooklyn at a bookshop called Books Are Magic, I was pleased to attend an event held in to mark the publication of Be the Person Your Dog Thinks You Are by C. J. Frick with drawings by Liza Donnelly. Don't worry if you haven't heard of the author; C. J. Frick is actually a composite of the names of the book's editors. Ms. Donnelly talked about the book and about dogs with fellow New Yorker cartoonist Carolita Johnson, who brought her own dog along for good measure. (Dogs were officially welcome at this event, but no others showed.) Afterwards, Ms. Donnelly signed copies of the book. You know, I just might have to go to Brooklyn more often.
