Cases of art forgery are nothing new, unfortunately. The case of John Re in today's Times is remarkable though not only for its scope, but for the bizarre fact that he put about $1 million of his ill-gotten gains into a submarine! The vessel, which is called "Deep Quest," does not dive and may be no more than a "movie prop" refurbished at great cost. He used it as a "luxury houseboat."
Does it make any sense to sell fake art and use the proceeds to buy a fake submarine? Is there anyone reading this blog who could not have put the money to far better use?
Note: Forgery is the great scourge of the art market. Are there any forgeries on this blog? You tell me.
