Merian Metamorphosis

Here are some remarkable hand-colored, engraved plates by naturalist Maria Sybilla Merian. They depict plant and animal life of Surinam. Insects were her particular specialty. In April, the William Doyle Galleries in New York sold a disbound copy of Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium containing 50 of the 72 original plates.
