Roz Chast's Cringe and Die: A True Story

Roz Chast's cartoons are quirky and clever. She is one of the most popular artists at The New Yorker today. Frequently her humor veers away from the standard single-panel cartoon into something more like a comic strip which has to be read panel by panel.

Or not read. This photograph is quite a challenge to make out, no? How does one deal with an eBay listing one is not sure one can see?

With no bids at $499.99, the drawing was relisted at under $400 with four brand new photographs, but really they were not all that much better. The seller now states he bought the drawing at a charity auction for $1100. Below is how I think the cartoon reads.

Cringe and Die:  A True Story
"Laura! How nice running into you!"
(Who is this person?)
"How are the kids and everybody?"
"Oh, everybody's fine!"
(I don't have a clue. P.T.A? Sam's friend's Mom?
Quasi-neighbor? Okay, I'm just going to plunge in.)

"So, tell me! How've YOU been?"
"Oh, I'm RECUPERATING."
[Pause aghast]

[Pause. Glare.]
"Well, it was good to see you!"

I don't believe it! Did someone really write "Killed" on a drawing
purchased by The New Yorker but never published?

The above listing was unsuccessful as well. Finally, the cartoon was offered with a Buy It Now price of $379.99. The seller now wrote, "I have priced this to sell right away. Take advantage of my generosity." Somebody did, and got a good deal.

Note:  Inspired by this artwork, I've created a new label below called NYerKilled. I will use this to mark those pieces which I believe were purchased and prepared for publication by The New Yorker but, for whatever reason, were never run in the magazine. This is not that rare an occurrence. At the moment, there is one other piece on the blog which has this designation, and one more coming fairly soon. By the way, in case you didn't know, you can click on any label directly beneath a blog post and see a listing of all the blog posts which share that label.

Now, if you yourself should own any original artwork that was "killed" by The New Yorker, or if you're the new owner of Cringe and Die: A True Story and can manage a better photo of the artwork, I'd love to hear from you. Also, if this piece has any publication history after it was "killed," I'd appreciate knowing about it.

With this in mind, I have created another useful new label, published?, which appears on many of the posts where I have incomplete information regarding publication history, including whether a piece was published at all, and if so where and when. Feel free to click on the label and browse if you think you can help solve some of the great mysteries of our time.
