When Matthew Diffee graciously asked me what animal I'd like him to draw in my copy of Hand Drawn Jokes for Smart Attractive People, I naturally went with a dog. After all, I already own books with a Diffee duck and a Diffee porcupine.

Liza Donnelly: Women on Men

Liza Donnelly's new cartoon book Women on Men (2013) arrived in the mail yesterday and it looks great. For once, men don't have much to say for themselves; the amusing commentary is all from a woman's perspective. It turns out we men make good subjects for humor. Who'd have guessed?

A classic 1984 cartoon collection by George Booth with an original signature and inscription sold for a very reasonable price on eBay. One can easily find unsigned copies of Omnibooth selling for more--much more. Allow me to demonstrate:

Finally, from Summit Read in Summit, New Jersey, we have an unsigned "new" copy selling for more than eleven times the price of the signed and inscribed copy on eBay. I personally have no plans to do any book shopping at this store.

They Moved My Bowl Signed by Charles Barsotti

I love signed books, but I usually don't go out of my way seeking them out. An author's signature is great, of course, but if there is any question of authenticity it's hardly worth the effort. If a book is signed in my presence that's wonderful; at least I know it's the real thing. It's also very nice when a copy of a book comes along with both a convincing signature and a reasonable price.

Take this copy of They Moved My Bowl by the very funny Charles Barsotti. There's really no reason to doubt the signature. It's extremely plausible and the price is extremely fair. This was a good deal for someone.

A Cartoon Portrait in Roz Chast's The Party, After You Left

This copy of Roz Chast's The Party, After You Left (2004) is signed and inscribed with an original cartoon portrait. A general rule about cartoon collections is ridiculously easy to remember: Cartoon books are great, but they're even better signed, and especially better signed with an original drawing. This book appeared last year on eBay. Incredibly, I was the only bidder.

Remembering Ed Fisher

Ed Fisher (1926-2013) was one of twenty-five cartoonists included in The Punch Line (1969), a collection of Punch cartoons edited by William Cole for the American market. A memorial service for Fisher will be held by the Society of Illustrators, 128 E. 63rd St., New York, NY today, May 21, at 5 p.m.

Felipe Galindo's Manhatitlan

On May 3rd, I attended the opening reception for Felipe Galindo's exhibition "Manhatitlan: Mexican and American Cultures Intertwined." The show consists of a series of vibrant, limited-edition prints from the artist's ongoing Manhatitlan series. Mr. Galindo, who signs his work Feggo, was on hand for the festivities. The exhibition continues on weekdays through May 31 at City College of New York.

Kenneth Mahood: Playing Both Sides of the Pond

Cartoonist Kenneth Mahood produced magazine covers inspired by Vincent Van Gogh for Punch in England and for The New Yorker in the U.S. They were separated by thirteen years and a large ocean. Both are informed by Van Gogh's vibrant artistic style, yet each also reflects the distinct sensibilities of the magazine it was designed for. Mr. Mahood knows a good idea when he has one.

Happy Earth Day!

Earth Day falls on April 22. Last year, I'm sorry to say, my celebration of Earth Day was marred by the unsolicited appearance of Marvin Martian. Or is it Marvin the Martian? Either way, I'm certainly not going to let that happen again this year. Happy Earth Day, earthlings!
