Mischa Richter's cartoon for the New Yorker issue of February 28, 1994 provides a good example of the use of foreshortening, the technique of rendering various objects—such as body parts—in perspective so that those that are closer to the viewer appear larger. It works very well here, as it increases the relative size and emphasis on the sneakers which are, after all, the subject of this gag. Imagine how much weaker the cartoon might be if we were to observe Sid in a side view.
