An example of original 1955 New Yorker cartoon art by Claude Smith shows how some unfortunate framing and matting choices have consequences over time. The art is matted a bit too tightly obscuring some of the wash and coming right up against Claude's signature. The matte is not acid-free which has resulted in matte burn right up to the edge of the image. The caption is typewritten on low-quality paper that has yellowed and acidified, while the history of first publication has dislodged and begun to migrate.
