Lee Lorenz: The Temptation of St. Anthony

The earliest lithograph I am aware of by Lee Lorenz, cartoonist and former art editor of the New Yorker, is The Temptation of St. Anthony dating from 1981. Lorenz, aside from his skills as a cartoonist, plays in a jazz band and that evidently informs his personal take on St. Anthony's temptation, although Lorenz plays cornet rather than saxophone. The black and white print was published almost a decade earlier than his editions for the Circle Gallery and unlike those does not appear to be based directly on any of his published New Yorker cartoons. The edition size of 50 represents a more moderate number of impressions than the 300 that were later to be created for the Circle Gallery.
