Saul Steinberg by Irving Penn

Sheet-fed gravure is a printing process for making high-quality impressions. This gravure is a 1960 Swiss impression of a 1947 Irving Penn photograph. The subject is Saul Steinberg. The artist is posed staring intently at the camera and drawing a man's head, presumably the photographer's. Steinberg had arrived in America in 1942 just five years earlier.
