George Price: Talk/Don't Talk

It was just a couple of months before the founding of the National Organization of Women when George Price's cartoon was published in the April 14, 1966 issue of The New Yorker. Price's characters are not exactly caught up in the social movements of the sixties. The original art was one of two Price works that came to the auction block on Sunday.

The three empty chairs, two of them catty-cornered, each lead our eye to the electric sign. The husband acts as if he is oblivious to the extreme irritation he is very deliberately causing.

I needed some direction for The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #829 from the issue of November 28, 2022. My classy caption is shown below. The drawing is by Lonnie Millsap.

"Everywhere you look, there's porn."

Sign Off

Here is a photo I took earlier today in Manhattan. The sign itself may be upside-down, but at least the arrow is pointing in the right direction!

F.D.R. Drive Entrance at 79th Street, New York City

January 16, 2013 Update:  The sign is now right-side-up. It also has been rotated ninety degrees around the pole, so that it is directing southbound rather than eastbound traffic correctly toward the F.D.R. Drive.
