Ludwig Bemelmans: Habana Tramp Steamer

Habana Tramp Steamer, a 1956 watercolor and graphite work by Ludwig Bemelmans was originally offered for sale by Hammer Galleries of New York. The gallery was founded by Armand Hammer in 1928 and is still in business, although it has moved. The label on the back shows a two-digit postal zone, likely indicating the art was offered by the gallery no later than 1963, when ZIP Codes were introduced.

eBay Item Description

That 2017 eBay best offer was not disclosed, but it is somewhere below $4895. The very same watercolor was offered by Skinner, Inc., just three months prior to the eBay auction. The Skinner photo seems somewhat more anemic by comparison, and it sold more anemically for just $861. Nice flip, but one wonders whether the saturation of the eBay photos was enhanced? Asked another way, which image is truer to the original, Skinner's or eBay's, and did the difference in color intensity affect the respective sale prices?
