From the estate of Lee Lorenz, The New Yorker's art editor from 1973 to 1993 and then the magazine's cartoon editor until 1997, comes a cover rough from Jean-Jacques Sempé. The preliminary art shows men in business attire, briefcases at rest, eating lunch outdoors in a public plaza. At the bottom, Lorenz has written in pencil, "Please add some women" with arrows indicating both seating areas. Sempé complied. The published cover of May 18, 1987 does include some women. Whether or not Lorenz asked for it, the finished art shows some black people as well.
