It's instructive to look at the original artwork of George Booth, the legendary New Yorker cartoonist who passed away last week at the age of 96. His style seemed effortless, but often he painstakingly patched his drawings together to get just the look he wanted. Over four decades his washes have faded, making his line work all the more prominent. On eBay, a New Yorker original of his changed hands just last month.
