In 2001, Seth (Gregory Gallant) writes to his fan Michael that he considered keeping this splash page of original pencil art from Palookaville No. 15 for himself, but he just didn't get around to separating it out. So instead, he's going to oblige Michael's request and send him the preliminary artwork to this elaborate cityscape for Clyde Fans, Book Two. It is only five days after 9/11, but it isn't clear whether this event, which reminded us how suddenly our ordinary workaday lives could be transformed into scenes of incomprehensible calamity, prompted Seth's act of generosity. I suspect Seth is a pretty nice guy on most other dates in history as well.
Seth's humorous "'Official' Palookaville Form Letter" also serves handily as a certificate of authenticity, and it tells us what we know of the provenance. A little over a decade later and we see the drawing comes to eBay, where it sells for over $1,500. So, any regrets, Seth?
