Back in 1975, animator Chuck Jones presented Tom Shales of the Washington Post with the ultimate compliment to a journalist. The original pencil drawing of everyone's favorite persistent coyote at his moment of triumph is available from Argosy Books.

Dr. Seuss: A Sketch of Max from How the Grinch Stole Christmas!

In its October 20, 2025, sale, Heritage Auctions offered a small souvenir drawing by Dr. Seuss. It shows Max, the hapless dog in How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the 1957 book. Max's head is seen in profile, smiling for once.

The 2011 Certificate of Authenticity that accompanies this sketch is interesting in that Linda Jones Enterprises, the authenticator, is identified as a Chuck Jones company. Jones, of course, is the animator and director of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!," the 1966 television movie that is still the best adaptation of the Seuss Christmas classic. Could this be merely coincidence? You tell me.

Chuck Jones: Deck the Halls With Boston Charlie

The original artwork for Chuck Jones's 1976 Warner Brothers Christmas card was sold on October 20 by Heritage Auctions.

Chuck Jones's signature

"Deck The Halls With Boston Charlie" is a decidedly lame take on Walt Kelly's brilliant "Deck Us All With Boston Charlie" carol from his Pogo comic strip, as it reverts back in part to the correct lyrics we all know. Nevertheless, Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are in fine form at the piano, or at least Bugs is, in their musical roles from "Bugs and Daffy's Carnival of the Animals," a 1976 TV special featuring the music of Camille Saint-Saëns.

Songs of the Pogo is a songbook and album (1956) which includes the number "Deck Us All With Boston Charlie." The classic Christmas carol amended with wildly inventive lyrics returned to the strip in different versions over the years.

Grinch Storyboard Drawing: Singing Without Any Presents at All

Who can forget when the Grinch realizes he hasn't stolen Christmas after all? Chuck Jones's 1966 animated television special of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" remains the most successful screen adaptation of any book by Dr. Seuss. When all the Whos down in Whoville react to the Grinch's night of thievery by gathering together to sing, the Grinch finally experiences his big change of heart. This storyboard drawing is signed by Chuck Jones.

Max and the Grinch by Chuck Jones

Chuck Jones's 1966 animated television special remains the classic screen adaptation of Dr.

Seuss's "How the Grinch Stole Christmas." Just marvel at the characterization of Max and the Grinch in this single vivid animation drawing. This artwork was signed by Chuck Jones not in 1966, but many years later, evidently after Ted Turner purchased the MGM library.
