Garth Williams: And They're Off!

Illustrator Garth Williams's attempt to break into The New Yorker in the early 1940s produced a good deal of unpublished work (along with seven sales). A racetrack spot, shown here, is certainly not bad but it's not especially compelling either. Given the magazine's surfeit of talent, Williams was unable to carve out a meaningful space for himself there.

Constantin Alajálov for Naturalizer Shoes

In 1947 and 1948, illustrator Constantin Alajálov lent his talents to an advertising campaign for Naturalizer shoes. They were called "The shoe with the beautiful fit" and the illustrations have a beautiful fit as well.
