Ray's Copy of The Gremlins by Roald Dahl

Roald Dahl's wartime story The Gremlins was developed by Walt Disney but it never made it to the big screen. The tale was instead published in 1943 as a book with illustrations by Walt Disney studio artists from the unrealized production. A fan named Ray acquired an original drawing by Disney animator Bill Justice—along with a mock apology—in his copy of the book.

Friday the Thirteenth: Donald's Lucky Day

Take a look at the calendar. Today, Friday the 13th, is Donald Duck's lucky day according to the 1939 Disney short! Three of the five original illustrations of this cartoon short by Tom Wood for Good Housekeeping have survived. In general, the Disney illustrations for Good Housekeeping are among the most extraordinary illustrations the studio ever created.

Minnie Liberty

Back in 2005, five and a half years before I started this blog, I snapped a few pictures in the Disney Store and enthusiastically posted them on flickr. As it turns out, I did not keep posting on this site for long, but I did show an early (for me) interest in using the Internet to share with the world some of what I happened upon. Snow White Early Renderings

These early renderings of characters from Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) are most likely the work of animator Paul Sprunk. There are four original drawings and one printed model sheet of the seven dwarfs.

Standard Gasoline

This poster sold at Swann Galleries on August 3 for an impressive $6,500, no doubt because of the image of two very well-known Disney characters, Mickey and Minnie Mouse. Over the years, Walt Disney licensed his cartoon characters for use in a wide variety of advertising. This 1939 poster with Mickey and Minnie taking a moonlit drive to hawk Standard Gasoline strikes me as one of the odder campaigns. Today we're used to seeing these iconic characters primarily in children's and family advertising. There was a time, though, when Disney's characters were used to market gasoline to adult drivers.
