Cape Cod 2020

We arrived at Cape Cod on Sunday, July 5. The following day, Massachusetts went into Phase 3 of Reopening and we were able to dine inside at some restaurants. We were based in Chatham for the week. We had to lower our expectations this year, yet we enjoyed ourselves as much as any other summer in the Cape.

There will be no Chatham Band concerts this summer. The Whit Tileston Bandstand will remain empty.

The Chatham Squire is under new management. Dinner there was our only culinary disappointment this week, the first indifferent meal we have been served there in twenty years. Let's hope it was just an aberration.

The Chatham Bars Inn

The Chatham Bars Inn celebrated its centennial last year. Bars refers to the prominent sandbars in Pleasant Bay, as represented on the sign. The lobby area is decorated with antiques and Americana representative of the New England region.

Note:  In yesterday's post, an original Norman Rockwell painting was noted in this very hotel.

Meanwhile there are a growing number of posts here about Cape Cod.

Norman Rockwell's Portrait of America

Here's the scenario:  It is a brilliant sunlit morning. We're in the Stars Dining Room of the Chatham Bars Inn. Families are enjoying an outstanding New England buffet breakfast in the well-appointed room. Meanwhile one patron--who happens to be the author of this blog--finds himself standing agape, staring at a painting hanging on the wall. Can that be a Norman Rockwell?

The painting is framed under glass and I had to photograph it from the side to avoid reflected glare. A professional photographer was somehow able to take the picture head-on.

Note:  I know there aren't a lot of posts about Norman Rockwell on this blog, but what I have I share.

Thankfully there's a bit more here about Cape Cod.
