A Josef Achmann Bather

A woodcut by German expressionist Josef Achmann depicts a nude bather standing in a brook or river. The technique is bold and the composition is visually-interesting throughout. The Nazis considered modernist art to be degenerate and they did not permit the public exhibition of Achmann's work once they consolidated power in 1935. Achmann's work was not included in the Nazi's exhibition of Degenerate Art in 1937.

Covarrubias in Bali

A pencil version of the Balinese nude by Miguel Covarrubias shown in yesterday's post was sold by Christie's Hong Kong in 2013. The gouache on masonite version once belonged to Helena Rubinstein.

Renoir's Baigneuse

Perhaps the most beautiful bather by Pierre-Auguste Renoir remaining in private hands is to be auctioned at Christie's London this month. The 12,000,000 to 18,000,000 pound estimate, while significant, does not seem excessively high to me given the prices fetched recently for first-rate canvases by postwar artists such as Andy Warhol, Francis Bacon, Roy Lichtenstein, and Mark Rothko. While I have nothing at all against these artists, I think the art market has slighted Renoir somewhat. Who would think lush, sunlit female nudes by a master of French Impressionism could ever be in the least out of fashion?

Renoir's "Baigneuse debout, mi-jambes"

Maybe you think you'll never be able to own a bather by Pierre-Auguste Renoir. If you're after nothing less than a sumptuous Renoir oil painting you're probably right, but if you're willing to buy a print from the master's hand, you could be in business. Here is an original etching of a standing bather by Renoir which is being offered at Skinner on September 9. Renoir etched the plate himself, creating this image which exists in no other medium. A century later, it's still affordable to many.

Lot 128 Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919)

Baigneuse debout, mi-jambes, c. 1910, 

possibly a later impression (Stella, 23). Unsigned. Etching on paper, plate size 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 in. (16.2 x 10.7 cm), framed.
Condition: Margins over 1 1/4 inches, not examined out of frame.
Estimate $300-500
