It happened to currency, coins, and comic books, so it should be little surprise that autographs nowadays are being authenticated and slabbed. They are not being graded for condition, apparently, as each is unique there is therefore no good basis for comparison. The signature of the great caricaturist Al Hirschfeld, for example, is preserved in plastic for all time, or at least for the foreseeable future. As long as the autograph is visible, though, it can still sustain damage from light.
