The second New Yorker cover original by cartoonist Abner Dean to be sold on May 2 at Heritage Auctions was a work originally published in 1934. It depicts a tourist making an unusual discovery when visiting a totem pole.
It should come as no surprise that there was a greater lack of cultural sensitivity in the New Yorker of the 1930s than there is at the current moment. Still, the primary aim of Dean's cover is to be amusing.
