In yesterday's post, we saw three scarce promotional ashtrays for Cole of California swimwear. They were decorated with original designs by three New Yorker artists and issued in enameled copper by Bernäd Creations of Yonkers. So far as we know, these were not advertised in the pages of The New Yorker, and they may or may not have been offered for sale to the general public.
But The New Yorker did run advertising for Bernäd Creations with images licensed from artists who worked for the magazine. Most of these ads, below, were for ashtrays and highball glasses with images by William Steig. At least one ad, though, was for ashtrays and cigarette boxes designed by Saul Steinberg. Here are most of the advertisements, presented in chronological order.
Saul Steinberg The New Yorker, November 29, 1947 |
William Steig The New Yorker, November 6, 1948 |
William Steig The New Yorker, December 4, 1948 |
William Steig The New Yorker, June 11, 1949 |
William Steig The New Yorker, November 12, 1949 |
William Steig The New Yorker, December 10, 1949 |
Note: There were, as we saw yesterday, licensed Peter Arno products as well, but I don't believe these were advertised in The New Yorker. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
