Right now Joe Dator may be the only New Yorker cartoonist with a podcast about classic rock, but mark my words:  Some day every cartoonist will have one.

Even when I'm blogging about license plates, I am thinking about New Yorker cartoons. For example, I just published a brief review on Amazon of Michael Maslin's recent biography of Peter Arno.

Where's Miley?

Some may have noticed that an unusual thing happened this time around with my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #470 for April 13, 2015. My caption seems to bear a passing resemblance to what ultimately became the winning caption, with the one proviso that it is actually its exact opposite! To be sure, the winning caption for Frank Cotham's drawing is far more succinct than that wordy caption I wrote, yet the similar--and no doubt very common--thought process behind Tyler Smith's caption and my own is obvious. It's as if I thought I'd thrown a perfect strike and instead hit second base. Anyway, it's reassuring to know that I might have fared well if I'd submitted my caption on Opposite Day.

Kiss to Perform at the 2014 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Today Kiss will be performing at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. What an honor! It therefore seems to be an apt time to recall Ian Anderson's 1977 prediction about the expected longevity of the band. "I mean, how long do Kiss have? Another six months maybe." With all respect to Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull, he missed the boat on this one.

David Bowie Performs "Starman" (1972)

Seventies bands tended to have unique sounds. In some cases, their songs had unique subject matter as well. Here David Bowie sings "Starman," one of his songs that seemed to come out of the science fiction genre. To this day, I know of no other band that handles science fiction themes so well.
