A Pietra Dura Table Top

Today we turn briefly to furniture seen in a Chicago auction. A fine pietra dura table top, probably of Italian origin, is paired with an ornate, claw-footed, tripod base.

Here's looking at you, kid:

The presale estimate of $5,000-$10,000 seems high. True, it does include the base, but that can't be to everyone's taste. See, for example, the last photo.

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #89

"This week’s cartoon of two people reading books comes from Jeremy Nguyen." Thank you, Cartoon Collections, for that succinct and helpful explanation of this cartoon. Meanwhile the image file bears an intriguing name, or rather string of words: softcover, books, furniture, apartment, misnomer, hardcover, chair. What do you suppose the misnomer could be? I have no idea. My three misnomer-free entries are shown here.

"Would you mind standing? I want to read your chair."
"Next time, let's make the seat cushions softcover."
"I just don't see why we need a bookcase."
