Edward Koren's Eye Exam, Part 3

Contributor David from Manhattan has somehow unearthed yet a third book with an original drawing of an eye exam by cartoonist Edward Koren. Once again, it comes from the library of New York ophthalmologist David Pearce. The Hard Work of Simple Living was published in 1998 with the subtitle A Somewhat Blank Book for the Sustainable Hedonist. That serious word sustainable has found its way into the drawing of the eye chart. But mightn't the good doctor have preferred his drawing to have the more enjoyable word hedonist instead?

inscribed "For David" above the cat and "For my chum, David/Ed Koren/1998"
in a copy of The Hard Work of Simple Living:

 (1998)

Note:  Thanks once again to David from Manhattan for his continued efforts at finding books with original drawings by Edward Koren. I don't think Sherlock Holmes could have done better.

Edward Koren's Eye Exam, Part 2

Reader David from Manhattan has found more books with original drawings by cartoonist Edward Koren from the library of the late Manhattan ophthalmologist David Pearce. Today's book is "Well, There's Your Problem." published in 1980. Can you make it out?

Note:  Thanks to David from Manhattan for his excellent work unearthing books with original drawings by Edward Koren. Even Indiana Jones couldn't do that.

Edward Koren's Eye Exam

Contributor David from Manhattan provides the following scans from a copy of Edward Koren's Are You Happy?  The book is inscribed to Manhattan ophthalmologist David Pearce, who passed away early in June.

Edward Koren, Are You Happy? (1978)
Sketch of an ophthalmologist with his patient: "I can only make out the last line!"

Edward Koren, Are You Happy? (1978)
Inscribed "For David Pearce with my very best regards/Ed. K."

Note:  Thanks to David from Manhattan for doing all the work here. This is how I always wanted blogging to be.  You too can support your tired blogger by sending in scans of signed books with original drawings and maybe a note or two about them.  Then I put the material up on the blog and all's right with the world. Maybe you too have something unique by Edward Koren or some other New Yorker luminary. Help make a lazy blogger's life easy.

Have you been outside recently? Spring is just around the corner.

Barney Tobey's Eye Exam

A work of original cartoon art by Barney Tobey showing a monastic version of the  eye exam comes, appropriately, from the estate of an ophthalmologist. It looks very much like a New Yorker gag and may have been intended as one, but on the verso it bears a Collier's label from 1947. Certainly the subtle tones of the ink and wash would have been reproduced more truly in the New Yorker. Despite all the publication evidence to the contrary, the eBay seller of this piece listed it as a New Yorker drawing. The cartoon as it appeared in Collier's is reproduced here to put any remaining doubt to rest.  After all, what you see is what you get.
