Constantin Alajálov: The Ladies in Their Fancy Hats

A minor illustration, or so one might judge it, by the major illustrator Constantin Alajálov of The New Yorker and The The Saturday Evening Post shows no fewer than eleven ladies wearing fancy hats at a meeting of their club. The oddly-contoured cutout may or may not have been published. It was sold on eBay in 2016, tape and all, for a best offer south of $79.

Helen E. Hokinson: The Treasurer's Report

Tuesday's auction of original illustration art at Swann Galleries included this 1938 gem from the New Yorker by Helen E. Hokinson. Here one of her club ladies explains why she can't fulfill her official responsibility at this meeting. The speaker is made to stand out by virtue of her being the standing figure closest to the foreground. She is also readily distinguished by the dark shades in her outfit, as distinct from most of the other club members.
