Seth: Another Copy of Wimbledon Green Signed in 2005 With a Sketch

A few years ago I was occcasionally delighted to find an inexpensive signed copy of one of Seth's evocative picture novellas—as he sometimes calls them—particularly whenever he was good enough to have added a drawing of one of the book's distinctive characters. I bought a few of these collectible volumes, but here on the blog I noted that prices were steadily rising. Seth also seemed to be attending fewer and fewer signings. Prices climbed well over $100 for some of these books, although I'm not sure demand followed; some books have been languishing on eBay for years.

A copy of Wimbledon Green: The Greatest Comic Book Collector in the World (2005) signed in the year of publication is not personalized and has a small, quick sketch of the title character. It is selling for about five times the price of a similar copy I documented here just four years ago.

Again, back in 2021, I posted images of another 2005-signed copy very similar to this one. Four years ago, it sold for a best offer of $26.89 plus $15.83 shipping from Canada:
It's all in the archives here.

There is a still more expensive copy currently on eBay with a considerably more elaborate drawing.

Was I the one who drove up the price of books signed by Seth? I really hope not.

Tony's Copy of Wimbledon Green by Seth

It seems pretty clear that the MSU Comics Forum in Lansing, Michigan held on February 22 and 23, 2019 was a great venue for obtaining signed books from Seth with original sketches. Seth was the first of two keynote speakers at the event. Now Tony, of Tony's Comic Art and Collectibles located about an hour southwest of Lansing, has just sold what is probably the best copy of Wimbledon Green (2005) we yet have seen. The book, obtained on Saturday at the event, is signed with a gorgeous black and orange profile sketch of "the greatest comic book collector in the world." Not coincidentally, it is also the most expensive copy of the book we've encountered to date; its $250 asking price is more than three times higher than that of any previous Wimbledon Green copy documented on this blog. The book was listed on eBay on or about November 1, 2022 with two others from the same signing and it ended up selling two months ago on eBay for an undisclosed best offer. The other two books still remain available on the site.

Note:  Surely there must be other Seth books out there in private collections with original sketches of this caliber. Please send images my way if you'd like the book to appear on this blog.

Seth: Wimbledon Green Signed in 2005 With a Sketch

Canadian cartoonist Seth's Wimbledon Green saw publication in 2005. A copy of the book signed in that year of publication also contains a small original portrait of "the greatest comic book collector in the world." It just recently changed hands on eBay. This book's Autographed sticker suggests that Seth signed a stack of these and left them, drawing and all, with a bookstore for later sale. It's a nice copy, though not quite as special as many of those embellished by Seth for fans who attended signings in person.

Note:  This is only the second copy of Seth's Wimbledon Green to appear here on the blog, and both quite understandably include sketches of the title character. I'm curious, though, whether other copies may contain sketches perhaps of other, scarcer characters. Give a shout, please, if you know of any.

Seth: Wimbledon Green Signed in 2011 with a Sketch

Seth's 2005 book Wimbledon Green is subtitled The Greatest Comic Book Collector in the World. One doesn't have to be be a world-class comics collector to appreciate the book, but certainly an obsessively acquisitive habit of some degree couldn't hurt. Perhaps one of the finest personalized copies of this book out there was sold earlier this year on eBay:

Montreal:  Drawn and Quarterly, 2005

Signed and inscribed "for Chris/Seth/2011"
with a figure-length drawing of Wimbledon Green

Three related eBay listings show Seth's book covers rather than the unique sketches. That simply can't be a good business practice.

Note:  Is it possible for this blog to have too many original drawings by Seth? Send me scans or photographs of what you have and we'll find out.
