Dr. and Mrs. Sulzberger's Copy of Freud's Da Vinci by Mark Podwal, M.D.

Freud's Da Vinci was published by Mark Podwal, M.D., in 1977. The back cover blurb reads, "At last! After 400 years...the 'repressed' drawings of Leonardo Da Vinci!" That's an ambitious subject for an illustrator to take on. A copy of the book, recently sold on eBay, comes with its own original drawing, apparently not "repressed."

Eleanor Hollack's Copy of Sigmund Freud by Ralph Steadman

In the year of the book's publication, illustrator Ralph Steadman personalized a copy of Sigmund Freud (1979), drawing and writing over his printed endpaper painting. The recipient's name isn't apparent on the page, so we'll just have to take the eBay seller's word that this book belonged to Eleanor Hollack, the publisher at Steam Press who worked with Steadman on various projects. The interpretation of the drawing is left to the reader.

Anne, Paul, and Ian's Copy of A Child's Guide to Freud

Illustrated by Whitney Darrow, Jr., A Child's Guide to Freud (1963) by Louise Armstrong is a humorous look at psychotherapy. The copy inscribed to Anne, Paul, and Ian for Christmas of 1963 has an original full-page color drawing of a boy outdoors wearing his winter gear. Darrow's fondness for putting inscriptions on signs is evident.

A Sigmund Freud Postcard Signed by Ralph Steadman

A promotional postcard for Ralph Steadman's Sigmund Freud (1979) boldly inscribed and signed with a black marker by the artist a month after publication now has made its way to eBay. Offered at 70 GBP, the seller notes, "I have priced the items to sell, however if you wish to make an offer please keep it 'real.'" This raises the question of just what the "real" value of a a fairly scarce item like this is. It's a nice enough postcard with two lovely illustrations from Steadman's book. While Steadman obviously lavished time and effort on these superb illustrations, the inscription itself is somewhat perfunctory. One way to determine the "real" value would be to let the market decide it. Start the bidding on eBay at, say, one pound sterling and see where the bidding goes over the course of a week. One could infer, though, that this method may be a trifle too "real" for the eBay seller.
