Good Night, Mr. Matchcard

Cartoonist Seth (Gregory Gallant) creates comics that are always worth a look. I find his preliminary drawings to be almost as interesting as the finished artwork. Here is a preliminary page of Clyde Fans, Book 2 from Palookaville No. 20. Somebody evidently snatched it up from the dealer almost as soon as it hit eBay. There wasn't even time for a single bid to be placed. Talk about hitting the brakes suddenly!

Seth: Running the Company into the Ground

Once again, here's some original preliminary art for the future Clyde Fans, Book 2 by Seth (Gregory Gallant) which is being published piecemeal in Palookaville. Issue no. 20 shows Seth continuing to chronicle  the decline of a manufacturing business over decades.

Abe's Opinion of Clyde Matchcard

Here's another page of preliminary artwork by Canadian cartoonist Seth (born Gregory Gallant). The finished artwork appears in Palookaville #20, and eventually it should be a part of Clyde Fans Book 2. I believe this page follows the impressive two-page spread of Borealis Business Machines that I showed back here. Now we learn that Abe's opinion of Clyde Matchcard hasn't exactly mellowed over time.

You know, I wonder whether Gregory Gallant has any regrets about taking on the pen name Seth. The problem with it is that it's just too simple. In the age of Google,  a search for a name like Seth results in far too many irrelevant matches, I would think. A unique name results in specific hits. The John Smiths of this world have a kind of anonymity in numbers. Most artists, I'd imagine, would prefer to be readily searchable.

Borealis Business Machines

From a January eBay auction, here is some fine preliminary artwork from Palookaville #20 by Seth (Gregory Gallant). Borealis Business Machines are the "Manufacturers of Clyde Fans" and I imagine the finished artwork in Palookaville will eventually be incorporated into Clyde Fans, Book 2.

Seth, we are told, never sells his published art, a choice sometimes made by artists who wish to control their legacy or support a charitable cause. One thinks of Maurice Sendak donating all of his original book illustrations to the Rosenbach Foundation. Bill Watterson seems to have kept just about all of his Calvin & Hobbes artwork. Much of Dr. Seuss's artwork was donated to the University of California San Diego. Holding on to original artwork allows an artist to keep his most important work in one place instead of having it dispersed all over the collecting world. On the downside, it reduces one's lifetime income, and it creates the challenge of finding a suitable home for the artwork. Seth has chosen to sell only his preliminary comic artwork, giving him what one hopes is a viable revenue stream.
