Another Signed Copy of They Moved My Bowl by Charles Barsotti

I think we can all agree that any book collecting New Yorker cartoonist Charles Barsotti's dog cartoons is a cause for celebration. The Moved My Bowl, published in 2007, fits the bill. A signed copy was recently offered on eBay, now the second to appear on this blog.

Barsotti boldly signed the book in blue marker on the front free endpaper. It is perhaps not the most perfect signature, the bottom of the last two letters having shifted upwards a bit.

Like the cover cartoon, a number of the drawings take place on psychotherapist's couches. 

Barsotti's line is simple, but his humor can be deeply moving, as with the cartoon set in heaven.

As the title page says, the foreword is by Barsotti's fellow New Yorker cartoonist George Booth, who brings a drawing of a cat along to the festivities. Reproduced after that is a 1990 letter from Peanuts cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, a.k.a. Sparky, which may or may not have set this whole project in motion.

The signature bled through the page a bit.

In 2013, I posted a similar copy of this book after it sold on eBay for $15. This time the asking price was $25—but there was a best offer option.

Seen and Noted: A Signed Copy of Charles M. Schulz's By Supper Possessed

Duly seen and noted on the eBay platform is a signed copy of By Supper Possessed (1988) by Charles M. Schulz. As is frequently the case, seller rialtos does all the heavy lifting so your blogger can sit back and enjoy the scenery. The book was sold on July 18, six months being as good a gestation time for a blog post as any.

Alan's Copy of More Peanuts by Charles M. Schulz

More Peanuts (1954) was an early hardcover collection of Peanuts comic strips by Charles M. Schulz. One Alan's copy has an origiinal drawing of Charlie Brown signed by the author. The condition is only fiar, alas, but who caould have imagined in 1954 what a future this franchise would have?

Charles M. Schulz: Peanuts Piano Dance

The first Peanuts Sunday strip was drawn by Charles M. Schulz early in 1952. Six years later, the original art seen here was produced:

The characters in the February 16, 1958 strip are Lucy, Schroeder, and Snoopy. Snoopy and Schroeder play a duet for violin and piano with Snoopy standing on the piano. As they play, the beagle breaks into his happy dance. Schulz produced any number of great strips. This one is a masterpiece.

The original art was sold at Heritage Auctions on August 4. I stopped by about a day before the sale to check on it. The online bidding was spirited, but the one could dream this superb comic strip was almost within reach.

Signed by Four Cartoonists: Bob Kane, Walter Lantz, Charles M. Schulz, and Dean Young

On a collaborative souvenir drawing, four leading cartoonists drew their classic characters: Batman by Bob Kane, Woody Woodpecker by Walter Lantz, Snoopy by Charles M. Schulz, and Dagwood by Dean Young. These artists came together on an unknown date, or dates, from the worlds of newspaper comic strips, comic books, and animation. The characters were all popular, but there isn't all that much synergy between them.

Nevertheless, when bidding hit $1,500 with ten bids placed a full four days before the April 27 auction, I was pretty sure this set of souvenir sketches was as good as sold. But the estimate was an ambitious $2,500 to $3,500 and the reserve, undisclosed, was never reached. Why set it so high? I recommend reserves be set at half the low estimate. Sellers may or may not be pleased with the result of this strategy, but either way the market will set the price and, one hopes, move the merchandise. It's no achievement to be left holding an unsold piece that you want to unload and numerous bidders want to possess.

The Floripes' Copy of Christmas is Together-Time by Charles M. Schulz

Christmas is Together-Time by Charles M. Schulz was published in 1964, one year before "A Charlie Brown Christmas" first appeared on television. While the book might not have the catchiest title, at least the copy belonging to the Floripes makes up for it with an original drawing of Snoopy wearing his festive holiday stocking cap. Raptis rare books has had it listed at $3800 on AbeBooks for the past year.
