It seems Tom Bloom went into his library and came out with scans of the front and back covers of two vintage works by Siné (Maurice Sinet [1928-2016]). Scatty (1958) and Car...Toons (1964) are English-language cartoon collections from Reinhardt that were preceded by French editions. Siné would come to be known largely for his controversial political work, but these volumes of cartoons on the subjects of cats and cars are variations on more traditional cartoon themes. The drawings are accessible, using a direct and simple style often with bold lines. They betray a certain fondness for puns.

Twin Birthday Wishes from Patrick McDonnell
In 2003, Mutts cartoonist Patrick McDonnell presented twin birthday wishes to Hannah and Rachel. Earl and Mooch preside over the festivities from under the covers.

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #85
The file name for the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #85 cartoon reads Death Threats Department, not that that really helps with the captioning. My entries are shown below. The drawing is by Maddie Dai.
August 5, 2020 Update: The Winner
So for you folks keeping score at home, after scrutinizing eighty-five contests Lawrence Wood has mentioned at least one of my entries in eleven of them, yet I have never made it into the top three. My entries may not be funny, but they are worthy of discussion.
Note: This is Maddie Dai's first appearance on the blog. I know, I can't believe it either.

August 5, 2020 Update: The Winner
In his caption contest commentary this week, seven-time New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest winner Lawrence Wood mentions one of my captions first:

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #718
Come take a ride with my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #718 for July 27, 2020. The drawing is by Michael Maslin.
"I thought today we'd just loaf around." |
These captions didn't have enough horsepower.
Note: Last week in the Caption Contest, cartoonist Lonnie Millsap showed us that apartment life could be something of a zoo. My caption just didn't reach high enough. See what was up with Contest #717.

Adrian Tomine's 32 Stories Limited Edition
I have mentioned in the past my love of limited editions and my antipathy toward bookplates. But what if the limitation of a book is designated by a bookplate rather than by a traditional printed limitation page? Well, sometimes one has to make compromises. The limitation bookplate for Adrian Tomine's 32 Stories: The Complete Optic Nerve Mini-Comics (1995) is a case in point. It's really not bad: a color illustrated bookplate that is hand-signed and numbered in an edition of 500—fairly large. For a book collector, when the bookplate edition is the only limited edition, it may still be the best game in town.
Note: Drawn & Quarterly just published Adrian Tomine's The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist. If there's a limited edition, I haven't heard about it.
Gil Roth interviews Adrian Tomine about his new book on the Virtual Memories Show here.
Me, I'm still stuck in 1995.
