Twin Birthday Wishes from Patrick McDonnell

In 2003, Mutts cartoonist Patrick McDonnell presented twin birthday wishes to Hannah and Rachel. Earl and Mooch preside over the festivities from under the covers.

Charles Addams Birthday Greetings

In 1975, Charles Addams sent this hand-colored birthday greeting featuring Granny Frump from the Addams Family. The artwork, approximately the size of a postcard, sold for between $400 and $500 on eBay back in 2005.

April 24, 2023 Update:  I am now identifying this character as Granny Frump, rather than Grandmama.

Note:  More artist's birthday greetings can be enjoyed here.

I am grateful to reader David from Manhattan for providing this eBay image and information about the sale from his personal archives. EBay, as you may know, does not maintain auction listings beyond approximately three months. Over the years many images of great cartoon artwork have come and gone, and once they're gone they are pretty much irretrievable. I've managed to preserve a few wonderful images over the years, and I use this blog to make many of these public and, I hope, permanent. It occurs to me that I am not the only one with such a personal virtual collection, and others who have similar obsessive tendencies might be willing to share some of their archival material here on Attempted Bloggery. It is not easy to describe exactly what I am looking for, but if you've seen a few blog posts, you probably have a good idea. A good starting point would be original drawings, published or unpublished, by the artists typically featured on this blog, particularly but not exclusively those associated with The New Yorker. I generally look for as much information as possible to go with each image, including the source of the image and the sale price, if known. So, if you have access to something as nourishing as Granny's birthday cake, please contact me at my email address.

Birthday Wishes from Brother Sebastian and Chon Day

History for Sale offers this undated birthday greeting depicting Brother Sebastian carrying a cake with a single candle. The drawing is by cartoonist Chon Day. It is on a 3 x 5 inch card and is offered at $599, with occasional seasonal discounting evidently factored into the price. Nevertheless, dealers who specialize in historical documents seem to be asking prices far out of line with offerings of similar items on eBay. They also seem to be overly fond of watermarks in their images. I have a little theory that the use of watermarks is associated with higher than average asking prices, but I leave it to the scholars among you to try and prove it. In the meantime, I'm going to have some cake.

August 10, 2017 Update:  The price has been significantly reduced over the last four years.

Birthday Boop

Today, friends, is the birthday of my dear wife! So happy birthday to my woman, the icing on my cake. Here too is an additional birthday greeting which I'd like to dedicate to my own personal blonde bombshell courtesy of the curvaceous brunette Betty Boop. Yes, naturally I prefer blondes, but if I had to pick a brunette, Betty would certainly do. Incidentally, Leslie Cabarga's sexy original greeting card art sold pretty cheaply, it seems to me.

Heppi Boid Day to You!

Today's blog post is dedicated to my wife, who celebrates her birthday today. I wouldn't say she's a fan of Krazy Kat, so I don't know for sure if she'll appreciate a sentiment like "Be you ever so forgotten, there's someone who remembers." Krazy Kat delivers fond birthday greetings via gramophone with birthday cake to the incarcerated and apparently irate Ignatz Mouse, as delineated by the remarkable George Herriman.

First we have the published Krazy Kat Sunday newspaper comic strip, June 4, 1922:
