This wonderful cartoon by Helen E. Hokinson was published in The New Yorker. Two of the artist's society matrons revisit their college campus and reminisce about a past indiscretion which seems trivial by the relatively lax standards...of 1939. Fine stuff.
The original artwork was withdrawn by the consignor from an auction at Illustration House in 2007 where it carried a robust estimate of $3,000 to $5,000. Then the housing bubble burst in 2008, of course, and now in 2012 the artwork has been sold on eBay to an uncontested bidder for about $800, or just over a quarter of its 2007 low estimate.
