Claude Smith: Behind the News

An example of original cartoon artwork by Claude Smith from 1957 is executed in black ink with a blue wash which indicates where the gray tone was to be printed. The cartoon shows a married couple at home consuming the competing media of newspapers and television. The six-panel cartoon with the title Behind the News was published somewhere in 1957, but wherever it appeared it was not in the pages of New Yorker.

Claude's Whistle Stop Tour

Cartoonist Claude Smith takes us along on a candidate's whistle stop tour during the Presidential campaign season of 1952 (Eisenhower vs. Stevenson). This multi-panel cartoon was published in The New Yorker at the height of the political season. Claude, as he signed his name, evidently conceived this as a seven-panel cartoon, but it was published in only six panels. The original artwork is currently listed on eBay.

The Undersea World of Claude Smith

This is an original single-panel gag cartoon by Claude Smith recently sold on eBay for just $20. The auction listing provides no caption and no publication history, so I'd love to hear from anyone who can shed some light on where, when, and how this drawing was used. In the meantime, for want of anything better, I'd like to propose my very own original caption: "But how on earth could they know you had the idea way before Jacques Cousteau?"
