Claude's Whistle Stop Tour

Cartoonist Claude Smith takes us along on a candidate's whistle stop tour during the Presidential campaign season of 1952 (Eisenhower vs. Stevenson). This multi-panel cartoon was published in The New Yorker at the height of the political season. Claude, as he signed his name, evidently conceived this as a seven-panel cartoon, but it was published in only six panels. The original artwork is currently listed on eBay.

The original New Yorker artwork for Claude Smith's four-panel Last Chance Gas gag was sold recently on eBay for $125 with Buy It Now. The full details of the eBay listing are included below. Note how large each panel of the original artwork is compared to the size it was reproduced in the magazine. As I have lamented here before, the cost of framing such a large multipanel cartoon for optimal home display is likely far greater than the apparent market value of the artwork itself. Nevertheless, if you like a piece of original artwork enough to want to own it, it makes sense to be able to show it off in your home to its full advantage.

Claude's Whistle Stop

It's election season once again in the U.S. in case you haven't noticed. It is the time of year for the campaign stump speech. Back in 1952, The New Yorker published this four-panel cartoon by Claude Smith depicting a whistle stop tour. Here is the original artwork via eBay. Note that each hand-drawn panel is slightly greater than the size of a full printed magazine page, while The New Yorker's dimensions were larger then than today.
