School Days: Cartoons from The New Yorker

School Days:  Cartoons from The New Yorker is a 2010 Cartoon Bank collection, one of many that have eluded me—until now. When I found a copy selling for just $4.00 on AbeBooks with free shipping, I seized the opportunity of adding it to my library. The book is much like the other Cartoon Bank books but smaller, perhaps a salute to the diminutive Eustace Tilley in Michael Witte's cover illustration or else a tacit acknowledgement that these books were getting more expensive to produce.

Sight Unseen: Isabel's Copy of The New Yorker Book of Kids* Cartoons

*and the people who live with them

That ridiculous pair of asterisks in The New Yorker Book of Kids* Cartoons: *and the people who live with them (2001) makes it one of the most ungainly titles in the series. Not to worry; the book is far better than the title might lead one to believe. This volume is published by Bloomberg Press—whatever happened to him? The introduction is by Roz Chast and the cover cartoon is by Jack Ziegler.

In this case the opportunity to add an additional copy of this book to my library sight unseen was not a difficult one. The copy inscribed "To Isabel" comes, we are told by the Rochester bookseller, "with original drawing of large dog and smiling cat leaning on it, signed by Danny Shanahan who has 4 cartoons in this collection. Clean and bright copy." That's quite an upside. The downside? Twenty dollars plus shipping. All my decisions should be so confoundedly tricky.

Ice Breakers: Signed and Drawn In by Matthew Diffee

Ice Breakers:  A New Yorker Book of Cartoons was published by the Cartoon Bank in 2005. It is a collection commissioned by Grand Marnier and the dust jacket flaps list drink recipes (the Ice Breaker, the Conversationalist, the Remarkarita, and the Sweet Talker) which have the distinctive liqueur as the first ingredient. Unlike most of the corporate collections put out by the Cartoon Bank with a black-and-white cartoon on the cover, there is instead a specially-commissioned color cover illustration by Michael Witte, uncredited, but still no doubt.

Ice Breakers:  A New Yorker Book of Cartoons (2005)

The press run must have been very limited making this quite a rare find. Scarcity does not necessarily indicate it's expensive. There are a great many privately-printed Cartoon Bank collections out there and they often sell for just a few bucks. This copy was priced at $10. Best of all, it also has an original drawing by New Yorker cartoonist Matthew Diffee.

The New Yorker Book of Political Cartoons Signed by Hillary Clinton

It seems natural that politicians should appreciate political humor and cartoons, although ever since Boss Tweed was lambasted by Thomas Nast they have had to be understandably wary. In December of 2000, New York State's Senator-Elect Hillary Clinton signed and inscribed a copy of The New Yorker Book of Political Cartoons which had been published earlier that year. According to a pencil annotation, the recipient was Henry Welt. Welt is a New York City attorney specializing in intellectual property rights. The tone of the inscription is friendly, but Mrs. Clinton is also looking for some meaningful assistance in the Senate.

Priced at $850 by the Argosy Book Store, the purchase is not one to be taken lightly. There are probably not too many cartoon collections like this, but this book's value lies in the inscription rather than in the cartoons. The big question here is whether this is potentially a good investment and whether the book will go up in value should Mrs. Clinton be elected President in 2016.

The New Yorker Book of New York Cartoons with a Bob Mankoff Self-Portrait

In a copy of The New Yorker Book of New York Cartoons sold on eBay, cartoon editor Bob Mankoff has merged his signature with his self-portrait. The B in Bob forms a part of his right-facing profile. Bob Mankoff draws a lot of these self-caricatures, but I don't recall seeing one with this letter-play before.
