Bernie Sanders Caricature by Edward Sorel

Edward Sorel's caricature of Bernie Sanders illustrated Margaret Talbot's article "The Populist Prophet" in the New Yorker issue of October 12, 2015. The drawing of the Democratic Presidential candidate came up for auction so soon after publication that one assumes the seller is the artist and that he's hoping to cash in on Mr. Sanders's current high name recognition. Should Sanders not become the Democratic Party's Presidential nominee, this drawing might become less desirable to collectors. Of course, should Sanders become our next President, the artwork will become more valuable indeed. Sorel's illustration very specifically references Christ Driving the Money Changers Out of the Temple, a circa 1618 oil on canvas by Valentin de Boulogne painted in a style reminiscent of Caravaggio.

Note:  Prior to the auction at Swann, Rebecca Rego Barry wrote about this piece in Fine Books & Collections. Keep up the good work, Rebecca!

The blog archives mention Edward Sorel a couple of times in the context of the New Yorker.

This is Bernie Sanders's first appearance on this blog. I do have earlier blog posts on candidates
Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton.

Consult the archives for more on the art of caricature.

The New Yorker Book of Political Cartoons Signed by Hillary Clinton

It seems natural that politicians should appreciate political humor and cartoons, although ever since Boss Tweed was lambasted by Thomas Nast they have had to be understandably wary. In December of 2000, New York State's Senator-Elect Hillary Clinton signed and inscribed a copy of The New Yorker Book of Political Cartoons which had been published earlier that year. According to a pencil annotation, the recipient was Henry Welt. Welt is a New York City attorney specializing in intellectual property rights. The tone of the inscription is friendly, but Mrs. Clinton is also looking for some meaningful assistance in the Senate.

Priced at $850 by the Argosy Book Store, the purchase is not one to be taken lightly. There are probably not too many cartoon collections like this, but this book's value lies in the inscription rather than in the cartoons. The big question here is whether this is potentially a good investment and whether the book will go up in value should Mrs. Clinton be elected President in 2016.

Note:  One other interesting copy of The New Yorker Book of Political Cartoons has appeared on this blog. See what happens when four cartoonists sign and draw in a copy of the book. I would love to see other unique copies of this book if anyone can locate them...

There must be other cartoon books out there signed by politicians. If you know of them, this is the place to share them.

An Invitation to the J.F.K. Inauguration

You say you didn't receive your invitation to the Presidential Inauguration? That's funny, neither did I. Still, it's good to know you can buy these things, at least after the fact. For example, here's one invitation to the 1961 Inauguration of John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his Vice President Lyndon Baines Johnson. (How did those two ever get together on the same ticket?) It's a nice invitation, though it seems to have some discoloration along the upper edge. It's available from John McInnis Auctioneers in their February 17 presidential auction.
