The book's cover I interpret as a surrealistic comics riff on the David and Goliath story with the title character of Frederick Opper's Happy Hooligan grieving, a monumental pipe and that chin from E. C. Segar's Popeye, a lightning bolt straight out of C. C. Beck's Captain Marvel, not to mention a stray brick reminiscent of George Herriman's Krazy Kat. The landscape recalls the work of Giorgio de Chirico and René Magritte. Your results may vary.

Masterpiece Mini-Comics Signed by R. Sikoryak

The MoCCA Arts Festival, or MoCCA Fest, was held this year on April 2nd and 3rd at a new venue, Metropolitan West, not far from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. On the second day I had barely two hours to spend there so regrettably I did not attend any of the programming. Instead I picked up a number of signed books. It's time I shared them with you. First up is Masterpiece Mini-Comics (2013) by R. Sikoryak. He signed my copy and included a drawing of the hero of "Popysseus and His Journey Home." Homer would be so proud.

Popeye Pictures

These small, later paintings by Popeye comic illustrator Bud Sagendorf are dated between 1975 and 1986. They seem to make up a fairly unique collection, but the auction market didn't place too much of a premium on them.
