Lucy and the Football

Lucy offers to hold the football for Charlie Brown while he runs up to kick it. May I assume you know what generally happens next?

But in this Sunday comic strip from 1983, things are different. For once, Charlie Brown doesn't take the bait. How extraordinary!

Bonhams San Francisco is offering this original artwork by Charles M. Schulz for $18,000 to $25,000, which is not so outlandish for Sunday Peanuts strips these days. But I think this is an outstanding Sparky strip and it offers collectors a chance to own a unique example of the famous Lucy and the Football gag. I can imagine fierce competition for this one on February 17. Who knows how high the hammer price could go?

The Great Pumpkin

Last December, Profiles in History sold this original artwork to a classic Peanuts comic strip from 1963. Linus and Snoopy are in the pumpkin patch on Halloween night. Linus expects to see the Great Pumpkin appear, but he seems to have a moment of doubt.

I've never really gotten used to the soaring prices that original Peanuts comic strip art now commands. Still, the quality of this strip was never surpassed and it is hard to underestimate its cultural impact.
