My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #794

This week I tried to land my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #794 from the issue of March 14, 2022. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Charlie Hankin.

"They're suing for peace."

These captions were too alienating:
"Archie! Phone home!"
"It's about time they abducted some lawyers."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #39

This week cartoonist Charlie Hankin was in both the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #675 and the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #39. Dig my entries in the Cartoon Collections contest:
"Yeah, what are the odds, right?"
"Wow, I must be the luckiest guy in the world!"
"Hands down you're our best surveyor ever."
"Not a word about this to the stockholders."
"Not a word about this to management."
"Not a word about this to Mr. Koch."
"Are you still morally opposed to drilling?"
"Do you still think this isn't worth a little climate change?"
"On second thought about our underfunded pension plan, who cares?"

"Do me a favor and climb down into this hole for a second."
"What if just this once we stop worrying about the shareholders?"

"Call it cartoonist's luck."

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #675

It's time to explore strange new worlds and my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #675 for the issue of September 2, 2019. The drawing is by Charlie Hankin.

"Funny you two have never met."

These captions didn't mingle:
"Which of you wanted the Tang?"
"I thought I made sure my two lovers would never meet."
"I just can't breathe in here."
"Would you like to hear about my trip abroad?"

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #11,

Let's do a walk-through of the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #11. The drawing is by Charlie Hankin. My entries follow.

"I've finally found something in your price range."
"It's a bit of a hole-in-the-wall."
"You said you wanted rustic."

"What are your feelings about grizzlies?"
"Prepare yourself. It's a bit of a fixer-upper."

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #7

Dearly beloved, behold my entries in the late Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #7. The drawing is by Charlie Hankin.

"His last words were 'Do you have any idea who I am?'"
"He didn't care for the new guy."
"His favorite saying was 'It's always harvest time.'"
"I'll miss him. His loathing knew no bounds."
"He always hated peaceful endings."
"He was also good at taxes."
"He never shirked his duty."
"He never failed to lose a client."

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #571

Caption ho! Thar blows me entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #571 for May 29, 2017. The drawing is by Charle Hankin.

"Welcome to Sunken Donuts!"

And some throwaway captions:
"Not large. We call it Venti."
"Alas, I had dropped the treasure chest overboard."

June 19, 2017 Update:  I voted for the second caption.

June 25, 2017 Update:  Winning Caption

Note: Last week, cartoonist Robert Leighton fed the birds in the park. My caption wasn't worth tuppence. See why Contest #570 could launch a Hitchcock revival.

I may not know much about Charlie Hankin, but I know he's not an anchor baby.

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #488

Here is my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #488 for September 7, 2015. The drawing is by Charlie Hankin.

"See? It beats the view from Brooklyn."

Here are a few other caption ideas I did not submit:
"It still doesn't feel suburban."
"Isn't it time they finished the 2nd Avenue subway?"
"I'd prefer a tram."

September 28, 2015 Update:  Winning Caption

Note:  Last week, cartoonist Michael Crawford brought us into a bar on our hands and knees. My caption was soberingly similar to one of the finalists. Drink up the results of Contest #487 and let me know why I wasn't given a seat at the bar.

Charlie Hankin has been spotted at the bowling alley.

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #443

Here is my entry for the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #433 for September 22, 2014. The drawing is by Charlie Hankin.

"Did you bring the beer?"

Here are the other captions I considered along the way:
"May I?"
"This is right up my alley."

"But I brought my bowling shoes."
"I'll handle this. You get us some beer."
"Just this once and I'll never ask for anything again."
"It's all yours. I threw my back out."
"Miss one more time and I'm taking over."
"Aim for the pocket."
"How does it reset?"
"Care to split?"

October 13, 2014 Update:  Winning Caption

Note:  In last week's contest, Michael Maslin drew one hell of a fender-bender. I held my caption to only three words, although I had to make one of them up. See the sinful results of Contest #442.

Holy hen hankies! Yesterday's blog post here about William Steig's crying chickens was picked up on Michael Maslin's Ink Spill blog. Anyone interested in the world of New Yorker cartoonists should be following Ink Spill.

This is Charlie Hankin's first appearance on Attempted Bloggery. Welcome, Charlie! Click on the link to see his website.
