Poster for Peugeot

This advertising poster for Peugeot sold on August 3 at Swann Galleries for $6,500, a healthy price, to be sure, although still comfortably below the low estimate.  Note how the front tires are raised off the ground to emphasize sheer speed in this vintage 1919 automobile image, and how the shadows double as speed lines.  Racing served to improve the market cachet of many car makers, and posters such as this one added to the excitement surrounding the given brand.  The flat colors of the background separated by white exhaust are meant to suggest the French Tricolor.

My previous post on poster art is here.

Update:  My fourth and perhaps final update has been added to the Happy Birthday, George Booth post here. The New Yorker's blog officially takes note of James Gurney's unfinished cover contest.

  1. Fabulous image! Love the whizz-lines and the flying effect! Though one does wonder (a) how the driver saw where he was flying to and (b) how long it took to park in Sainsbury's car park! :)
