Walt Kelly's Pogo: After the Moonshot

"Today the moon, tomorrow the stars!" After America's first two successful space flights to the moon in 1969, Howland Owl realizes that the next obvious destination is the sun. He tells Churchy LaFemme he's invented a new kind of space suit. But has he?

The comic strip, of course, is Walt Kelly's Pogo and it dates from January 25, 1970, when everything was still rosy some three months before the nearly disastrous voyage of Apollo 13. The original art was sold on eBay in 2013 and your faithful blogger has been sitting on it all this time waiting for the right moment. Maybe this is it.

Ed Arno: Self-Portrait on a First Day Cover

Some time in the final decade of his life, cartoonist Ed Arno (1916-2008) signed a first day cover of the U.S. Space Discovery issue. He added a small self-portrait in profile. The space stamp, of course, has nothing at all to do with Arno's addition to the cover; the two, in my opinion, create no synergy and don't belong together. Yet collectors continue to present unrelated first day covers to all manner of celebrities for their signatures.

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #64

That's one small step for my three entries in the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #64. I found this one to be quite tricky. Does this scenario suggest a national tragedy? The drawing is by Carolita Johnson.
"There's a sort of funny story about your life support."
"Not the moon. Two more guesses."
"The good news is you're very much alive. The bad news is you're way off course."

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #690

That's one small step for my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #690 for December 16, 2019. The giant leap of a drawing is by Michael Maslin.

"Here we are, sir, back to 1-G."

These captions were a little too earthbound:
"The Eagle has landed, Mr. Baxter."
"Off for a spacewalk, sir?"
"Nice reentry, sir."
"Splashdown!"

could be headed straight to traffic court.

Hello, Roswell: Four Space Cartoons by Bob Eckstein

It isn't every day that four space-themed cartoons by New Yorker cartoonist Bob Eckstein come up at auction, but that is precisely what's happening tomorrow in Mount Kisco, New York. The cartoons are unique hand-colored prints created in 2012 in an edition of precisely one. They are signed, numbered, and dated, but most of all they are funny.
"Heelllllooooo, Roswell!"

The auction takes place on Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at the Benefit Shop Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit that supports other local charities. The buyer's premium is 28%, but this is a win-win all around. The artwork comes matted. Further auction images plus links (in aqua) to register and bid are provided below. Better be quick about it.
