My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #927

The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #927 from the double issue of December 30, 2024 & January 6, 2025, is set in a corporate office inhabited by two businessmen—and four seagulls. Two of the seagulls are perched on the men's respective balding heads. The standing, more subordinate executive speaks. The drawing is by Kaamran Hafeez.

"And yet, the environmentalists still hate us."

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #886

Life's a beach for some of us, as we see in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #886 from the issue of February 26, 2024. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Liza Donnelly.

"Get your own damn ketchup."

Here are four variations on a theme, and I rejected all of them in favor of a condiment:

"Why can't my life also be a beach?"
"Why does only your life get to be a beach?"
"How come only you get to live your best life?"
"And what if I want to live my best life?"

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #860

Life's a beach in The New Yorker  Cartoon Caption Contest #860 from the issue of August 7, 2023. My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Ed Himelblau.

"At least we scavenge with moderation."

These captions spent a little too much time in the sun:

"Oh, yeah. Can I get you anything?"
"There goes the neighborhood."
"That's why I like you. You're a bird with class."
"Are these jokers any relation to you?"
"I used to be like that until I saw 'Ratatouille.'"
"I knew we sat too close to the food."
"Promise me we'll never be like that."

Cape Cod 2022: Chatham Fish Pier

The Chatham Fish Pier is definitely worth a visit, an easy place to observe harbor seals in the water without the need to board a boat. There, seagulls and seals congregate looking to sample the catch of the day.

Cape Cod 2021: The Chatham Fish Pier

The Chatham Fish Pier is always worth a visit. In recent years, the harbor seal population has gone up and more of the seals have come close to the shore, occasionally luring sharks. The seals come to the fish pier for the same reason as the seagulls: to enjoy some of the fish discarded by the local fishermen.

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #91

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #91 comes with its own helpful explanation: "This week’s cartoon of a man amongst his trash heap comes from Kendra Allenby." Amongst? Trash heap is singular. Why not amidst? Anyway, no more trash talking. My three entries follow.
"His profile said he was a collector."
"I thought trash collector was his occupation."

"Apparently, I'm the only thing he can do without."

Cape Cod 2020

We arrived at Cape Cod on Sunday, July 5. The following day, Massachusetts went into Phase 3 of Reopening and we were able to dine inside at some restaurants. We were based in Chatham for the week. We had to lower our expectations this year, yet we enjoyed ourselves as much as any other summer in the Cape.

There will be no Chatham Band concerts this summer. The Whit Tileston Bandstand will remain empty.

The Chatham Squire is under new management. Dinner there was our only culinary disappointment this week, the first indifferent meal we have been served there in twenty years. Let's hope it was just an aberration.
