Arthur Rackham: The Sleeping Beauty with a Drawing of Merlin

Arthur Rackham's illustrations for The Sleeping Beauty (1920) by C. S. Evans are mostly executed in silhouette, but a souvenir drawing of the character Merlin dated Christmas 1920 and laid into a first edition of the book is decidedly not. Merlin, his facial expression visible, is shown intently thumbing through one of his "books of magic lore."

Marc Davis Plays Ball

One of the more unusual baseball collections to appear on eBay consists of balls which have been drawn on by some well-known cartoonists. For example, a drawing of Maleficent from Walt Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" (1959) is by animator Marc Davis, one of Disney's legendary "Nine Old Men." Such baseballs make for unusual novelty items, to say the least.

Eyvind Earle Concept Paintings for Sleeping Beauty

Eyvind Earle was the artist most responsible for the unique, stylized look of Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty (1959).  Two of his concept paintings for the feature production will be sold at Bonhams on December 14.

An Eyvind Earle concept painting from Sleeping Beauty

1959, watercolor on board, depicting Maleificent as a dragon behind the castle walls, signed lower right Eyvind Earle.

The Disney Studio hired Eyvind Earle in 1951. Within two years, he became the color stylist and inspirational artist for Sleeping Beauty. His artistic style, derived from medieval tapestries based on paintings by Durer and Breughal, had a large impact on the look of the characters and backgrounds. Many of the artists working on this film thought his style was a bit austere for this film, but Walt Disney thought otherwise.
