Denny Dimwit was a character from cartoonist Martin Branner's popular comic strip Winnie
Winkle. Last year on eBay the original artwork for one of the Branners' Christmas cards was sold
on eBay. It features the character Denny Dimwit stuffed into a Christmas stocking. His speech

pattern is used for the greeting, "A Merry Christmas an' a Happy New Year to youse."

Mail from Martin Branner

Here's an original mailing envelope drawn by cartoonist Martin Branner of Winnie Winkle fame. This World War II cover is postmarked April 1944 and addressed to his son Bernard who was serving in Mississippi. I believe this sold on eBay on November 8, 2011 for $450-460 to eBay buyer bakerfan, who purchased several other original Branner letters and drawings.

Here are three more envelopes with original splendid Branner drawings mailed to his son. I'm afraid I neglected to document these auctions properly before they disappeared forever from eBay, but I believe one sold to the same buyer again for $450 to $460.

Martin Branner Artwork and Photos

A stash of original artwork by cartoonist Martin Branner turned up in a barn in Moravia, New York. 

How it got there is not clear. Branner is best remembered for the comic strip Winnie Winkle. Here is 

a closed eBay auction full of rare paper items, including ideas for gag cartoons and vintage photographs.

Cartoonist Martin Branner created this undated color greeting for the Johnson children featuring the popular character Denny Dimwit from his comic strip Winnie Winkle. It has water stains but still looks pretty decent. It was sold on eBay on December 21 for a paltry $57.78.
