Kirk Stiles in College Humor, January 1940

Did readers of College Humor really identify with the injured football player in Kirk Stiles's cartoon from the January 1940 issue? The unsympathetic coach seems to be a caricature of the trainer who wants to win at all costs. Is it believable and, more importantly, is it funny? Finally, is it worthy of two exclamation points?

"Tie score, three yards to go for goal—and you break a leg!!"

Hilda Terry in College Humor, January 1940

The cartoon by Hilda Terry (1914-2006) from the January 1940 issue of College Humor takes us into the football stadium on game day. From seats high above the end zone we see two young women from behind, the only fully-shaded figures. One woman, the speaker, holds a pair of binoculars, but it becomes apparent she is not following the action on the field.

"Sally's wearing a new red hat, and Milly Watson's got on a silver fox. . .
looks like an imitation. . . ."

Harry Haenigsen in College Humor, January 1940

It seems fitting to resurrect a 1940 gag cartoon by Harry Haenigsen in honor of the thirtieth anniversary of Shark Week. If nothing else, this groaner demonstrates the importance of the hyphen in the term man-eating shark.

Note: This is the first appearance of cartoonist Harry Haenigsen here on Attempted Bloggery. To me, this cartoon recalls the stylized multipanel gags of Otto Soglow. According to Ink Spill, Haenigsen published work in the New Yorker from 1931 to 1939, which places this cartoon just after that. In 1943, Haenigsen was to launch the popular newspaper comic strip Penny.
