At a local bookstore earlier this month, I found a signed copy of Kafka Does Stand-Up: Cartoons on Books and Writers (2023) by Sidney Harris. It's a little scuffed but at $9, I figured why not? It's fairly new and, truthfully, I had not heard of it. The book lists twenty-five other cartoon collections by Harris, so maybe I shouldn't be so surprised that I haven't kept up.

In the August 8 Illustration Art sale at Heritage Auctions, two original cartoons by Sidney Harris were sold. The first had been published in Playboy and was posted here yesterday; today's is from The New Yorker and features two hippopotamuses seated at a restaurant reading their menus. Hippos, by the way, are herbivores, which is probably a good thing.

The year 1985 was the sixtieth anniversary of The New Yorker. The 1975-1985 cartoon album collected cartoons that appeared in the pages of the magazine over a decade. Rare Book Cellar of Pomona has by far the best signed copy of this book we've yet to see here on this blog. It belonged to someone named Blair and the inscriptions tell us she worked for the British humo(u)r magazine Punch when she visited The New Yorker. She wasn't there alone, either.

The cartoons of Sidney Harris often take their subject matter from the sciences. His original New Yorker art sold on April 23 at Heritage Auctions dips its toes in the theory of evolution. It was published in 1990.

In its April 23 Mainstream Illustration sale, Heritage Auctions sold an original Playboy magazine cartoon that first appeared in the December 1967 issue. The artist is Sidney Harris and the primates are making some important advances.

Is the end finally nigh, or is a cartoonist merely sending greetings to collector Paul P. Goldberg? The year is 1972 and Sidney Harris responds to Goldberg's request for a sketch on a self-addressed postcard by drawing a prophet parading a large sign. The sign, simply enough, reads, "Hi, Paul! Sidney Harris." Harris's cartoon signature appears at the prophet's feet.
