In The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #930 from the issue of January 27, 2025, a whale is in a recording studio. The sound engineer is speaking. The drawing is by Niall Maher.
"Let's do another take after my nap."
This caption wasn't a hit:
"I still can't get rid of the reverb."

February 22, 2025 Update: I voted for the caption from Mount Prospect.
In the CartoonStock Caption Contest number 187, we find ourselves in a recording studio. There is an incongruous cat being held up in the soundproof booth.
The rules of the monthly cash prize contest have not changed (and neither has my description of them): Five dollars buys up to three entries. Real cash prizes are $500 for first place and $100 for each of five runners up. As of this writing, I've put $160 into the first thirty-two pay-to-play contests and this thirty-third challenge brings my total cash outlay up to $165. Having achieved runner-up status with two previous entries, I've collected $200 from CartoonStock, so I'm still playing with the house's money, thank goodness. In fact, so few contestants enter that the odds may generally be considered favorable even for us less-gifted caption writers. My three entries are shown below, above the break. I thought many people might submit something similar to the lone caption below the break, so I eliminated it. The cartoonist is Farley Katz.
"Cue the Meow Mix." "She's not into music—or anything else." "She's my mews." * * * "Be honest—am I the coolest cat?"
Take five for my entry in The New YorkerCartoon Caption Contest #723 dated September 7, 2020. The drawing of animals in a recording studio is by Tim Hamilton.
"It's as if they never learned how to play together."
These captions couldn't carry a tune:
"What did I tell you? Better than Alvin." "I like that not one song is audible to humans."
September 14, 2020 Update: The Finalists
September 21, 2020 Update: I voted, possibly too late, with West Hartford.
September 29, 2020 Update: The Winner
Note: This is Tim Hamilton's first appearance on the blog. I met him at the last MoCCA Fest—almost bought one of his books.
Last week in the Caption Contest, cartoonist Teresa Burns Parkhurst showed us why piano movers need to keep up their insurance payments. My caption was strictly a liability. How do you get to Contest #722? Practice!
