My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #970

In The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #970 from the issue of December 1, 2025, the setting is a library (or maybe a bookstore). A librarian with a cart is talking to a woman in the Psychology section while they look at the Grim Reaper browsing nearby in the Self-Help section. The librarian speaks. My entry appears below. The drawing is by Hilary Fitzgerald Campbell.

"I'll start wheezing and lead him to the travel section."

These captions needed to be shelved:

"Why shouldn't he want to work more efficiently?"
"He'll never find anything to replace chess."
"I wouldn't mind some new life goals."
"He should be working on his people skills."

My Copy of Death by Laughter by Harry Bliss

Harry Bliss's cartoon collection Death by Laughter appeared in 2008. Many but by no means all of the cartoons are on the subject of death. This collection does not include any of his New Yorker work. There is an entertaining introduction by Christopher Guest which humorously  recounts his own early, unsuccessful attempts at cartooning. Fortunately, he found his way to film work. Guest then recounts how he and his wife went on to collect original cartoon art by a number of well-known cartoonists including Bliss.

A signed and authenticated copy of the book was purchased by me on eBay in June of 2017 for $9.98 plus $3 shipping. The cover illustrates the basic concept of Death by Laughter.

With the signature of Harry Bliss

Spoiler alert:  I admire the way Bliss chose to end the collection.

The back cover has a funny cartoon blurb.
The back cover

For once I did not archive the eBay auction. This is all I have:

The signature was certified by Beckett Authentication Services. I don't advocate making purchase decisions solely on the basis of certificates of authenticity, but in a case like this where a certificate corroborates what is already pretty clear, it can be a positive factor in the decision.
Certificate of Authenticity

The authenticator placed a sticker in the book on the page directly behind the signature. Note the dedication and the acknowledgment of  the Grim Reaper.

An online record of the certification still can be looked up almost five years after the fact.

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #761

"Just don't make any lemonade."

July 5, 2021 Update:  The Finalists

July 24, 2021 Update:  I neglected to vote on this one despite having two weeks in which to do it, or perhaps because of it. While I appreciate that the first caption is the most similar to my own, it plays on the end of the saying that begins with "When life gives you lemons..." The third caption, of course, plays on the beginning of that very phrase. So I most likely would have voted for the second caption, from Altadena, which manages to do something unexpected.

The Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #116

Death visits the doctor in the Cartoon Collections Caption Contest #116. My three entries are shown below. The drawing is by Robert Leighton.

"You're in the wrong office."
"I'm sending you to a specialist I don't like."
"Everything looks good. Come back in fifty years."

  The Winner

My caption did get a mention this week from Lawrence Wood, the seven-time New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest winner, in his commentary on the contest. This is the twelfth time one of my captions has been memorialized in this manner. Apparently I'm one of the few this week attempting to bear the standard of medical humor. Heaven help us.
