My "Women Laughing" Postproduction Kickstarter Reward

On June 16, I was truly enthralled by a short preview of the documentary film "Women Laughing." This was shown at a Swann Salon, an event the night before the most recent Illustration Art auction at Swann Galleries. The film's subjects are the women cartoonists of The New Yorker. The short film was then a work in progress by a talented team led by cartoonist and author Liza Donnelly.

The following month I made a pledge of $200 towards the film's postproduction Kickstarter campaign (plus $5 to ship the reward I readily accepted in exchange). My feelings toward crowdfunding have softened over the years. It has now become clear to me that many worthy projects could never see the light of day without it.

No one who reads this blog regularly will be surprised by the wonderful reward I chose for myself. Only fifteen of these signed books were available and they were grabbed up quickly.
Now the film has been completed. And here is my beautiful, new copy, decorated on the half-title with a drawing from each signer. They are (clockwise from the center) Liza Donnelly, Liana Finck, Roz Chast, Amy Hwang, Emily Flake, and The New Yorker's cartoon editor Emma Allen.

Finally, good mothers always say to send thank you notes.

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #959

In The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #959 from the issue of September 15, 2025, a woman carries a pyramid of steaming coffee mugs and speaks to a man who doesn't have any coffee. My entry appears below. The drawing is by Amy Hwang.

"How do you take it?"

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #942

The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #942 appeared in the issue of April 28, 2025. A snail with a snail shell speaks to a snail with a tortoise shell. My entry appears below. The drawing is by Amy Hwang.

"How are things in the Galápagos?"

These captions couldn't keep up:

"I think we should take it slow."
"This relationship is moving too fast."
"How did you get here so fast?"
"I feel like the tortoise to your hare, so to speak."
"May I bounce a few ideas off you?"

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #878

All seems ready for Christmas in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #878 from the issue of December 11, 2023—but then? What could this woman be saying as she dons the stockings? My caption is shown below. The drawing is by Amy Hwang.

"You'll have to hop."

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #755

I wore my best loincloth while working through The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #755 from the issue of May 17, 2021. I'm not sure it helped. The drawing is by Amy Hwang.

"Before I have my coffee I'm an absolute Neanderthal."

These captions were a little too primitive:

"Maybe you could bring me up to date."
"Well, look who's been busy inventing!"
"Mind if I pull up a rock and join you?"
"There's no F. The sign distinctly says
CAVE."
"What's wrong with living in the past?"

My Entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #648

All aboard for my entry in The New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #648 for January 28, 2019. The drawing is by Amy Hwang.

"They added a stop just for Henry."

These captions left the station without me:
"I thought it was serious but he was just passing through."
"Promise you'll let me know if my model railroading ever gets out of hand."
"We had to learn about eminent domain the hard way."

Note:  Last week cartoonist P. C. Vey took a magic wand to the shredder. My caption failed to levitate. Presto! It's Contest #647.

My Entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #601—Almost

Thanks for chasing down my entry in the New Yorker Cartoon Caption Contest #601 for January 22, 2018. The drawing is by Amy Hwang.
"What does that mean, convergent evolution?"

These weren't any good either:
"What was the name of that Texas ranger?"
"Who are you calling spineless."
"Is that what you call Snowflake?"
"It's got me on pins and needles."
"You mean this is the Saguaro Run?"
"Stop saying 'not a snowball's chance in hell.'"

January 29, 2018 Update:  The Finalists
The contest ended early last week and my entry was counted in next week's gingerbread man contest, so my caption's even worse than I imagined. Here are the finalists:

February 5, 2018 Update:  I voted for the first caption.

February 19, 2018 Update:  Winning Caption

Note: Last week, Drew Panckeri showed us man's best friend in space. My caption lacked gravity. If you like nice round numbers, you'll love Contest #600.

Amy Hwang has managed to avoid mention on Attempted Bloggery before today. Her run of good luck is over.
